Hagerman, Barbara Anne

Barbara Anne Hagerman (née Oliver), music teacher, choral conductor, lieutenant-governor of Prince Edward Island (b Hartland, NB 9 February 1943). Barbara Hagerman won her first music festival at age 9 and received her early education in New Brunswick. After graduating from Mount Allison University in 1965, where she specialized in voice and organ, she moved with her husband, Nelson Hagerman, to Prince Edward Island where she began teaching music in the Island school system and later operated a private voice studio. As a performer she appeared in recitals, on local radio and with the Prince Edward Island Symphony. Her choral experience began with children's choirs and in 1986 she became conductor of the Summerside Community Choir. Under her direction this adult choir toured throughout Atlantic Canada and was one of 7 selected to represent Canada at a Canadian Choral Celebration at Carnegie Hall, New York City, in 1997. She held this position until 2003. More recently, she was director of music at Summerside Presbyterian Church.

Hagerman has been a member of various provincial and national boards: the PEI Music Festival Association, the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals, the Canada Council, the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors and the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust. As well, she was an adjudicator for Atlantic Canada music festivals and a host of a CBC Maritime-Radio school broadcast.

Installed as lieutenant-governor of Prince Edward Island on 31 July 2006, Barbara Hagerman became the 40th lieutenant-governor of Prince Edward Island since the creation of the colony in 1769 and the 27th since Confederation. Upon her swearing in as lieutenant-governor, Hagerman became a member of the Order of Prince Edward Island and Chancellor to the Order.
