The Canadian Encyclopedia Artificial Intelligence Policy

While the use of generative Artificial Intelligence is becoming more commonplace, Historica Canada maintains a commitment to accuracy and originality in the work that we create. Where there are benefits to some of the tools being developed which may help us streamline workflows and best practices, Historica Canada commits to transparency and will disclose the use of generative AI as it should arise in our projects. Where no disclosure is made, it should be understood that generative AI was not employed.

The Canadian Encyclopedia’s “request translation” feature uses AI to generate a translation of any Encyclopedia article in a select number of languages. The request translation feature is specifically to increase the accessibility of information on The Canadian Encyclopedia to users in ways that would not be feasible using human translators. As a Canadian organization we remain dedicated to using human translators to make all of our articles fully available in both official languages. For this reason, English and French are not available as options using the request translation feature. To ensure our official translations are accurate, grammatically correct and properly capture the nuance of both languages, we will continue to use human translators for English and French.
