Matthew Henry Halton

Matthew Henry Halton, journalist (b at Pincher Creek, Alta 7 Sept 1904; d at London, Eng 3 Dec 1956). One of Canada's most distinguished journalists, and one of the finest reporters to establish a national reputation as a radio broadcaster, Halton attended U of Alberta (BA, 1929) and U of London before joining the Toronto Star in 1931. In 1932 he became the Star's European correspondent, and thereafter his career was spent in Europe. In addition to interviewing the major personages of the time, he served with distinction as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War (1936), the Russo-Finnish War (1939-40) and in the Middle East in 1941-42. He was the senior war correspondent for the CBC during the campaigns in Sicily, Italy and North-West Europe. Awarded the OBE in 1945, he served as the CBC's European correspondent from 1945 until his death.
