My name is Cpl. Sherri-Lyn Shearer. I joined the Army Cadets two and a half years ago. There were some friends of ours who were in it who suggested it to us. They said, "Maybe you should join cadets?" and we asked, "What's that?" and they explained to us that they train once a week. It's for ages twelve to nineteen. You can go to camp. You gain a lot of experience, and it's a lot of fun. It's a very interesting thing to join. It's active, it's a community. You can gain good experience and a lot of peers, and volunteer opportunities which helps with high school. They train once a week from September to June. You can gain communication skills – public speaking. They teach you to develop leadership skills. We also have marksmanship training. There's first aid training, and a lot of different things. The experience is a lot of fun. I chose Army Cadets mainly because I thought they did a lot more training that I was interested in. More outdoors, and I was really interested in learning some marksmanship. It helps motivate me to study, saying to myself, "If I can succeed in cadets, maybe I can study a little harder in school." I did, and it has actually improved my marks. I am planning on joining the Reserves when I'm seventeen. I actually want to go into infantry and learn some Para trooping. I want to take a Para trooping course when I'm about eighteen, and I plan to apply to the Kingston Military College.
