Bennett John Horne was the son of Andrew P. Horne and Elizabeth (nee Benere) Horne of Enfield, Nova Scotia. Bennett's brothers and sisters were David, Angus, Mary Gertrude, Daniel, William Ernest, Gerald, Philip, Morris, Cornelius, Edmund and Katie.

Bennett served in the First World War with the Canadian Pioneers Army Unit, 1st Pioneer Battalion. He was killed in action on June 6, 1916 at the age of 24.

He has no known grave, thus his name is inscribed in a panel at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium.
