He tried to save his batman [aide] and he got killed because a piece of shrapnel got him. I remember in that same area there, the handle of my teapot was shot off, that’s how close it was.
Carpiquet airport was one of the major disasters we had. It was in Normandy and Carpiquet airfield was one of our places we took an awful beating in. I remember the CO [Commanding Officer] there, our OC [Officer Commanding] tried to save somebody who wasn’t wearing his helmet. He tried to save his batman [aide] and he got killed because a piece of shrapnel got him. I remember in that same area there, the handle of my teapot was shot off, that’s how close it was. But we used to get meteor messages all the time, to keep us up to date and kept us pretty busy as far as trying to stay up with the [weather] conditions. And we had to cope day and night. We fired a lot of shells, we had I guess a big job to do and we tried to do it, that’s all.
