If I was going over there, another month, I would have either killed them or they would have killed me.
The way things were going, because my father’s family was in Poland, they had a flour mill and they were all killed by the Germans. And when I heard what they were doing to Jewish people plus others, this is what made me join the military. And if I was going over there, another month, I would have either killed them or they would have killed me. Before I went into the army, I was in what they called 100 percent war work. And they were making casing and glue for the [de Havilland] Mosquito bombers, it was made out of wood. And then they also made, what do you call it, special cushions for them. I had basic and advanced training. The obstacle courses, the training with the Bren [light machine] gun, with the Sten [submachine] gun and there was a rifle, [Lee-Enfield] .303 [calibre] and grenades. And route marches. I had a lot of fun on it, I enjoyed it.
