Raymond Geoffrion

This testimony is part of the Memory Project Archive

Mr. Geoffrion joined the Fusiliers du Mont Royal (FMR) in 1937 and trained in the UK. His regiment, though poorly equipped, was deployed to Dieppe in August 1942. At the lowest level there were no briefings on their task, other than ‘a landing in France’, and so had little idea what was expected of them. They were quickly taken prisoner and were shipped off by train to a Stalag (camp) on the German-Polish border, where they were held for 33 months, working outdoors. The prisoners were marched south in early 1945 as Russian forces approached Silesia, and were liberated in Bavaria some four months later by American troops.
