I was a paymaster during the war. I held every rank up to captain. So there’s nothing sensational. I went to Cassino, that is Monte Cassino. We fought there, and then Sicily and up through Italy, to Florence. And we were up, I had reached Florence when they said you can come home. We were a little bit afraid when we landed in Sicily, but the Germans were on their way up north; and so we had a hell of a job getting through Cassino. We were stuck there for about two months, but we finally got through. And then we kept going, and the Germans were pulling out. I went as far as Florence and they said, well, you’ve already had your five years, you can go home. And I had that feeling that I could have done better. I could have given more, but I had it easy compared to others.
