Etienne Zack

Etienne Zack, painter (b at Montréal 22 Jul 1976). Etienne Zack studied at Concordia University (1996-1997) and Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design (1998-2000, Diploma of Fine Arts, Painting). Zack lived in Vancouver, where he had set up a studio after graduation, eventually returning to Montréal in 2009. During his Vancouver period he developed an individual style of painting involving the depiction of objects and views drawn from his experience of his everyday surroundings, often presented in bizarre and unexpected juxtapositions. A favourite source of subject matter has been the artist's studio, the tools, materials and detritus of the artist's working environment.

Etienne Zack's paintings have been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including "Futuribles"/Las Americas/ARCO, Madrid, Spain (2004), as well as in shows at Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen, Norway (2006) and at the MUSÉE D'ART CONTEMPORAIN DE MONTRÉAL (2009). In 2010, he was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montréal. Etienne Zack's works are represented in the collections of the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montréal, the MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS DE MONTRÉAL and the NATIONAL GALLERY OF CANADA. In 2005 Zack was the winner of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition, and he was awarded the Prix Pierre-Ayot in 2008. In 2010 he was selected to be a feature artist at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and in 2012 his work was included in Oh, Canada, billed as "the largest survey of contemporary Canadian art ever produced outside Canada," organized by the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.
