    David Blackwood

    David Lloyd Blackwood, CM, O Ont, printmaker, painter (born 7 November 1941 in Wesleyville [now New-Wes-Valley], NL; died 2 July 2022 in Port Hope, ON). David Blackwood was considered one of Canada's most important etchers (see printmaking). Dubbed “Newfoundland’s gothic master” by the Globe and Mail, Blackwood’s work often depicts the treacherous seafaring life of his native Newfoundland. He taught at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, and served as honorary chair of the Art Gallery of Ontario.

    David Rimmer

    David Rimmer, filmmaker, photographer (born 20 January 1942 in Vancouver, BC; died 27 January 2023). David Rimmer was an exemplary craftsperson and one of the finest technicians in experimental filmmaking. His work is consistently subtle and intricate, and often rather sly. Rimmer worked extensively with contact and optical printing and with videographics (in, for example, Divine Mannequin, 1989). He was one of the most consistent, most painstaking film artists in Canada.

    Director X

    Julien Christian Lutz (a.k.a. Director X, Little X), director, filmmaker, mental health advocate (born 31 October 1975 in Toronto, ON). After starting out as the protégé of music video maven Hype Williams, Director X directed the music video for “Northern Touch,” a landmark in Canadian hip hop. He has since directed more than 100 music videos for some of the biggest names in hip hop and popular music, including such iconic videos as Destiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious,” Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” and Drake’s “Started from the Bottom” and “Hotline Bling.” Director X has also made feature films and art installations. He was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2022.

    Donald Mowat

    Donald James Mowat, CM, makeup artist (born 11 December 1963 in Montreal, QC). Donald Mowat is an award-winning makeup artist and prosthetic designer for film and television. He has received a Primetime Emmy Award, two Gemini Awards and several trade guild awards, as well as multiple BAFTA nominations and an Oscar nomination. He is perhaps best known for his work with director Denis Villeneuve, and for being the personal makeup artist for such stars as Mark Wahlberg and Daniel Craig. Mowat has also been lauded for his work as a volunteer and mentor and is a Member of the Order of Canada.

    Douglas Kirkland

    Douglas Morely Kirkland, photographer (born 16 August 1934 in Toronto, ON; died 2 October 2022 in Los Angeles, California). Photographer Douglas Kirkland was best known for his highly stylized and artistic portraits of Hollywood celebrities. His best-known work was a series of photographs he took of Marilyn Monroe in 1961. He was also well known for his behind-the-scenes photographs from many film productions. The first still photographer to be made a member of the American Society of Cinematographers, Kirkland authored several books and received numerous awards.

    Eddy Cobiness

    Eddy “Doc” Cobiness, Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) artist (born 17 July 1933 in Warroad, Minnesota, United States; died 1 January 1996 in Winnipeg, MB). He was a founding and eminent member of Professional Native Indian Artists Inc., known widely as the Indian Group of Seven. Cobiness’s artwork was featured in many prominent collections, including those of Queen Elizabeth II, former Canadian prime minister Jean Chrétien and Academy Award-winning actor Charlton Heston. Influenced by Pablo Picasso, Cobiness worked in many mediums, including ink, watercolour, oil and acrylic, and his stylized brush strokes were referred to as “flowing.” Cobiness’s artwork often depicted animals and the natural world.

    Elsa Gidlow

    Elsa Alice Gidlow, poet, journalist, philosopher, humanitarian (born 29 December 1898 in Hull, United Kingdom; died 8 June 1986 in Mill Valley, California). Elsa Gidlow was a key LGBTQ2 figure in the first half of the 20th century. She co-published Les Mouches fantastiques (1918–20), the first queer magazine in North America. She also wrote what is believed to be the first collection of openly lesbian love poetry published in North America: On A Grey Thread (1923). Her 1986 autobiography was the first memoir by an openly lesbian writer. She was also a co-founder of Druid Heights, a utopian community outside of San Francisco.

    Emily Carr

    Emily “Millie” Carr, painter, writer (born 13 December 1871 in Victoria, BC; died 2 March 1945 in Victoria). Along with Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven and David Milne, Emily Carr was one of the pre-eminent Canadian painters of the first half of the 20th century, and perhaps the most original. She was also one of the only major female artists of that period in either North America or Europe. Her bold, almost hallucinatory works depict nature as a furious vortex of organic growth. They have also been criticized as appropriations of Indigenous culture. Carr was also a celebrated author. Klee Wyck, a collection of short stories based on her experiences with Indigenous people, won a Governor General's Literary Award in 1941.
