Keith Leon Moore, anatomist (born 5 October 1925 in Brantford, ON; died 25 November 2019). Over the course of his career, Moore published numerous anatomy textbooks. He was widely recognized for his writing and teaching.
Career
Educated at Western University (PhD, 1954), Keith Leon Moore joined the staff at the University of Manitoba in 1956. In 1965 he became professor of anatomy and head of the department there. In 1976 he assumed the same positions at the University of Toronto, later becoming associate dean, Faculty of Medicine, before retiring in 1991 as an emeritus professor.
Internationally recognized for his research in genetics, embryology and teratology, he served as past president of the Canadian Association of Anatomists and as chairman of the board of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies.
Publications
The textbooks that Keith Leon Moore wrote were widely adopted. These include The Developing Human (1973, 3rd ed 1982), Before We Are Born (1974, 2nd ed 1983) and Clinically Oriented Anatomy (1980).
Honours and Awards
A former fellow of the International Academy of Cytology and of the Royal Society of Medicine, Keith Leone Moore received numerous awards both for his publications and teaching, including the 1984 J.C.B. Grant Award of the Canadian Association of Anatomists. In 2012, he was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He was also awarded honorary degrees from Ohio State University (2012) and Western University (2015).
