Vermilion Pass takes its name from the mineral springs of iron oxide located along the Vermilion river, 9 km Southwest of the pass, where Indigenous peoples gathered material for war paint and decoration. Sir James Hector's party of the Palliser expedition was the first non-Indigenous group to cross the pass in August 1858.
