Edward Dagge Worthington, physician (b at Ballinakill, Ire 1 Dec 1820; d at Sherbrooke, Qué 25 Feb 1895). In 1847 Worthington pioneered the use of general anesthesia in Canada.

Edward Dagge Worthington, physician (b at Ballinakill, Ire 1 Dec 1820; d at Sherbrooke, Qué 25 Feb 1895). In 1847 Worthington pioneered the use of general anesthesia in Canada. Using an inhalation apparatus he built himself, he performed major operations and assisted at births while his patients were under the influence of first ether and later chloroform. He practised for over 50 years in Sherbrooke, was a military surgeon, a governor of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Lower Canada, and helped found the Canadian Medical Assn in 1867. He also contributed many articles to contemporary medical journals. In addition to his MD from St Andrews (Scot), Worthington was awarded honorary degrees from Bishop's and McGill.
