Frank (Franklin Eugene) Churchley. Educator, author, pianist, b Oshawa, Ont, 15 Jun 1930; B MUS (Toronto) 1950, LRCT 1952, MA (Columbia) 1957, D ED (Columbia) 1959. His thesis was 'The piano in Canadian music education'. He taught music in high school, studied piano in the summer of 1954 with Nadia Boulanger and Robert Casadesus at Fontainebleau, and served 1959-64 as head of the Dept of Fine Arts, University of Calgary. He joined the faculty of McGill University in 1964, and moved in 1966 to the University of Saskatchewan at Regina, and in 1969 to the University of Victoria, specializing in music education. In 1991 he continued to teach at the University of Victoria, with a cross appointment in the faculties of music and education. He was president 1967-9 of the CMEA. He has given papers and seminars on music education. In addition to many articles, his published works include an eight-volume series (with six LP recordings) Basic Goals in Music, a program for primary grades (Toronto 1964-72) which he co-edited with Lloyd Slind.
