Lloyd Merlin Dickie, marine ecologist (born 6 Mar 1926 in Canning, NS). Dickie was the founding director of the Marine Ecology Laboratory at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Nova Scotia. He is internationally known for his work on marine production systems.
Early Life and Career
Lloyd Merlin Dickie was born to Pearl and Ebenezer Dickie in Canning, Nova Scotia. He grew up in Kingsport, Nova Scotia, where his father was a fisherman. He earned a bachelor of science from Acadia University, a master degree in zoology from Yale University and a PhD in zoology from the University of Toronto. In 1965, Dickie became founding director of the Marine Ecology Laboratory as a component of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Nova Scotia. He established the laboratory a major centre for the study of marine production systems for the Fisheries Research Board of Canada. He was chairman of the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie from 1974 to 1977. In 1978, Dickie returned to the Marine Ecology Laboratory as a senior research scientist. He held this position until he retired.
Dickie has an international reputation for his work on marine production systems, including fisheries bio-energetics, genetics, acoustics, theory of search, species interactions and population demography. He is also well known as a teacher and has been appointed to various academic, governmental and international agencies concerned with fisheries and biological oceanography.
