Jacques Dextraze

Jacques Alfred Dextraze, "Ja Dex," soldier (b at Montréal 15 Aug 1919; d at Ottawa 10 May 1993). He served during WWII in Iceland, England, France, Germany and the Netherlands and was promoted from private to lt-col commanding the Fusiliers Mount-Royal.

Jacques Alfred Dextraze, "Ja Dex," soldier (b at Montréal 15 Aug 1919; d at Ottawa 10 May 1993). He served during WWII in Iceland, England, France, Germany and the Netherlands and was promoted from private to lt-col commanding the Fusiliers Mount-Royal. In the Korean War he commanded the 2nd Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment. Commandant of the Royal Canadian Infantry School at Camp Borden and commander at Camp Valcartier, he was chief of general staff in charge of UN operations in the Congo in 1963. In 1972 he was promoted general and became chief of defence staff. In 1977 he retired from the CAF to serve as chairman of the board of directors of CN until 1982. He was a Companion of the Order of Canada.
