Ross, John Jones

John Jones Ross, physician, politician, premier of Québec 1884-87 (b at Ste-Anne-de-la-Pérade, Lower Canada 16 Aug 1833; d there 4 May 1901). A rather dull and uninspiring man, Ross was premier 23 Jan 1884 to 25 Jan 1887. His Conservative government refused to take a position on the Louis RIEL affair, leading to its defeat late in 1886 by the new PARTI NATIONAL of Honoré MERCIER. In an attempt to keep the Conservatives in power, Ross resigned in favour of L.O. TAILLON; defeated in the House, Taillon resigned and Mercier became premier. PM John A. MACDONALD rewarded Ross with an appointment to the Senate.
