Arthur Jackman

Arthur Jackman, mariner, nicknamed "Viking Arthur" (b at Renews, Nfld 1843; d at St John's 31 Jan 1907). He commanded his first sealing steamer, Hawk, to the ice fields in 1872. His other vessels, in later years, included Aurora, Falcon, Terra Nova and Eagle.

Arthur Jackman, mariner, nicknamed "Viking Arthur" (b at Renews, Nfld 1843; d at St John's 31 Jan 1907). He commanded his first sealing steamer, Hawk, to the ice fields in 1872. His other vessels, in later years, included Aurora, Falcon, Terra Nova and Eagle. Over 36 years, Jackman took 552 510 seals, losing none of the 8000 men in his charge. For several summers, he participated in the whale hunt around Greenland, and in 1886 he took explorer Robert Peary on his first trip to the Arctic. At the time of his death, he was marine superintendent for Bowring Brothers in St John's.
