Castors ("Beavers"), a group of Ultramontane dissident Conservatives (see ULTRAMONTANISM) established in 1882. Members opposed Québec Conservative premiers J.A. CHAPLEAU and J.A. MOUSSEAU, whom they accused of ousting them from power in order to ally themselves with the moderate Liberals. The group opposed the government's lax administration, its co-operation with unscrupulous businessmen and its favouring Québec City over Montréal, especially in university matters. François-Xavier-Anselme Trudel gave the group its name by signing the pseudonym "Castor" to his pamphlet, Le Pays, le parti et le grand homme (1882). The group lacked structure and remained a fringe group until its demise in the late 19th century.
