Francis Nicholson, soldier, governor of NS (b at Downholme, Eng 12 Nov 1655; d at London, Eng 5 Mar 1727/28). He led 2 unsuccessful attacks on Canada via the Hudson River and Lake CHAMPLAIN (1709 and 1711).

Francis Nicholson, soldier, governor of NS (b at Downholme, Eng 12 Nov 1655; d at London, Eng 5 Mar 1727/28). He led 2 unsuccessful attacks on Canada via the Hudson River and Lake CHAMPLAIN (1709 and 1711). In 1710, he captured PORT-ROYAL with 500 marines and a flotilla under Commodore George Martin. He was made governor of Nova Scotia and Placentia in 1712, but spent only August to October 1714 in the new colony. Nicholson was recalled and dismissed, ostensibly for maladministration.
