Frederic Hubert Soward, historian, educator (b at Minden, Ont 10 Apr 1899; d at Vancouver 1 Jan 1985). Educated at Toronto, Edinburgh and Oxford, he taught history at UBC 1922-64 (head of department, 1953-63).

Frederic Hubert Soward, historian, educator (b at Minden, Ont 10 Apr 1899; d at Vancouver 1 Jan 1985). Educated at Toronto, Edinburgh and Oxford, he taught history at UBC 1922-64 (head of department, 1953-63). As founder and director (1946-64) of the program in international studies at UBC he was a pioneer of academic study in this area in Canada. A consultant in the Dept of External Affairs during WWII, he helped to plan its rapid expansion during those years. Through his teaching, publications and popular lectures, and by his promotion of the League of Nations Society, the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, the Institute of Pacific Relations and the United Nations Assn he promoted among Canadians a more informed interest in the world beyond their borders.
