George Alexander Elliott, FRSC, economist, professor, civil servant (born 22 July 1901 in Napier, ON; died 21 November 1988 in Kingston, ON). A man whose imagination, exactitude and humanity inspired his students, Elliott made important contributions to economic theory by publishing articles in academic journals while professor at the University of Alberta and the University of Toronto. Career
George Alexander Elliott was a graduate of the University of Manitoba. He taught there from 1924 to 1926, before accepting a position at the University of Chicago from 1928 to 1929. He was professor and head of the Department of Political Economy at the University of Alberta from 1929 to 1946 and later taught at the University of Toronto from 1946 to 1957. (See also Political Economy.) Elliott was appointed to the Tariff Board of Canada from 1957 to 1971.
Publications
George Alexander Elliott was the editor of the Canadian Journal of Economics and Political Science from 1948 to 1957. References to his work still appear in scientific literature. Turning his attention to Canadian trade policy, he published Tariff Procedures and Trade Barriers in 1955. (See also International Trade.)
Honours and Awards
He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1947, made a Guggenheim Fellow in 1953-4 and was elected president of the Canadian Political Science Association in 1957. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by Queen's University in 1965.
