Harry John Carmichael
Harry John Carmichael, industrialist (b at New Haven, Conn 29 Sept 1891; d at Toronto 28 Oct 1979). Born in the US of Canadian parents, Carmichael came to Canada and became president and general manager of McKinnon Industries, St Catharines, Ontario, in 1929. In 1936 he became VP and general manager of General Motors of Canada at Oshawa. In WWII Carmichael's familiarity with mass-production techniques proved invaluable to the Canadian economic war effort, and his appointment to head C.D. HOWE's war production was no surprise. In 1944 and 1945 Carmichael turned to the reconversion of industry to meet peacetime requirements, and at the end of 1945 he left Ottawa. Later, Carmichael served on the Industrial Defence Board (1948-51) and held many corporate directorships, including that of ARGUS CORPORATION LTD.
