In the summer of 1981, forests immediately south were heavily damaged by fire, and this for a time affected trapping, an important source of income for some local residents. Today, many of those who live on the reserve work in the shipping industry and the service sector.
Hay River Reserve
Hay River Reserve, NWT, Indian Reserve, population 292 (2011c), 309 (2006c). The Hay River Reserve is located on the east bank of the east channel of the Hay River. Across the river from the town of HAY RIVER, it is the home of the K'atlodeechee First Nation and only one of 2 Indian reserves in the NWT.
