Gutteridge, Helena Rose
Helena Rose Gutteridge, feminist, trade unionist, socialist politician (b at London, Eng 1879 or 1880; d at Vancouver 3 Oct 1960). Gutteridge immigrated to BC in 1911 and organized the BC Women's Suffrage League. Her interest in working-class women contributed to her participation in trade-union activities, and before long she took a leading role on the Vancouver Trades and Labor Council. Her responsibilities there kindled a turn to socialist politics and membership in the CO-OPERATIVE COMMONWEALTH FEDERATION. In Mar 1937 she was elected as a CCF representative to Vancouver City Council, becoming its first woman member.
