Francis Michael Clancy, "King," hockey player (b at Ottawa 25 Feb 1903; d at Toronto 10 Nov 1986). He joined the Ottawa Senators in 1921, where he was a leader and local favourite. He was sold to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1930-31 for an unprecedented price of $35 000 and 2 players. Though light, his speed and nerve earned him popularity among fans, and his gritty play inspired the successful Leaf clubs of the 1930s. He was an NHL referee, coach of Toronto 1953-56 and later VP of Maple Leaf Gardens. His wit and lively recollections made him a popular commentator on his sport.
