I was born in New York, Coney Island. I guess being of age, and out of a job somewhat, maybe I thought of joining the army. I’m not sure. My younger brother, a little bit younger than me, he joined the army and then I’ve got another brother, younger
than me, he joined the army. The blackout, I think, there were lots of blackouts when I was there. The flying bomb [V-1 and V-2 rockets], they came over to England and I was stationed in Folkstone, part of England I think. And the bombs were coming
over, flying bomb. When they landed, they took out a whole block with them. I was peeling spuds at the time for being a bad boy, and the window came right out around the chair where I was sitting. But I happened to be outside watching the bomb.
