The Muttart Public Art Gallery, a not-for-profit institution established in 1977, is situated on the second floor of CALGARY'S Memorial Park Library occupying space that was renovated with funds provided by the Muttart Foundation. Fourteen art groups combined to create the Muttart Gallery Associates, which was originally formed with a mandate to operate the Muttart Gallery in partnership with the library. Today, the gallery functions independently of the library, and has a professional staff of 10 who are assisted by over 100 volunteers.

The Muttart, a noncollecting gallery, is dedicated to exhibiting the work of western Canadian emerging and established artists who focus on contemporary art practice. In conjunction with the exhibitions, the Muttart offers a variety of education programs including School Tours, Children's Art Classes, Adult Art Programs and outreach community events. In addition to these activities, the Muttart co-ordinates the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program for the south-central region of Alberta.
