René Lecavalier

René Lecavalier, sports announcer (b at Montréal 5 July 1918; d at Montréal, 6 Sept. 1999 ). After classical studies at Mont-Saint-Louis, he joined Radio-Canada, serving as a war correspondent with United Nations radio in N Africa 1942-44.

René Lecavalier, sports announcer (b at Montréal 5 July 1918; d at Montréal, 6 Sept. 1999 ). After classical studies at Mont-Saint-Louis, he joined Radio-Canada, serving as a war correspondent with United Nations radio in N Africa 1942-44. Upon his return to Radio-Canada, he worked for a number of different programs, including P'tit Train du matin with Miville Couture. But he was drawn to sport, and in 1952 called the first hockey game broadcast on television by Radio-Canada; he remained the commentator for "La Soirée du hockey" until his retirement in 1985. Lecavalier was honoured in 1994 with induction to the Canada Sports Hall of Fame for his broadcast career.
