Howard, Robert Palmer
Robert Palmer Howard, physician, educator, medical administrator (b at Montréal 12 Jan 1823; d there 28 Mar 1889). Best remembered as a superb teacher, Howard combined enthusiasm with sincerity and dignity, inspiring his pupils with his own zeal and love for medicine. One of those pupils was William OSLER, who often expressed his admiration for his former teacher. By 1860 Howard was professor of the theory and practice of medicine at McGill, and he was dean of the McGill medical faculty from 1882 until his death. His role as a teacher takes precedence, but he rendered distinguished service in other areas, and through his leadership, writings and addresses raised the standards of MEDICAL EDUCATION throughout Canada.
