McClintock, Sir Francis Leopold
Sir Francis Leopold McClintock, explorer (b at Dundalk, Ire 8 July 1819; d at London, Eng 17 Nov 1907). One of the British navy's most experienced arctic explorers, he participated in several expeditions to search for Sir John FRANKLIN. On the first of these (1848-49), he learned the techniques of northern sled travel which he later used to great effect. After 3 unsuccessful attempts, McClintock discovered the fate of Franklin and his men on his last voyage to the Arctic 1857-59. McClintock rose to senior rank in the navy and retired from active service in 1882.
