Sisters of St Anne
Sisters of St Anne, a female religious congregation founded in 1850 in Vaudreuil, Qué, by the Servant of God Marie-Esther Sureau, dit Blondin (Mother Marie-Anne), for the education of young rural girls and some activities of mercy. She had the support of Bishop Ignace BOURGET in Montréal from the beginning, but the young congregation experienced serious problems in its early years (the founder even had to relinquish her position as superior in 1854 and to remain in seclusion until her death in 1890). The congregation recovered from these trials and spread throughout Canada and the US. In 1996 there were 1013 sisters in Canada and the US (down from 1369 members in 1986).
