The outstanding Canadian soldier of his generation, he joined the 43rd (Ottawa and Carleton) Rifles in 1880, and was promoted captain and adjutant in 1884. After serving with the Midland Battalion in the North-West Resistance (1885) he joined the Permanent Force in 1888, serving with the infantry, mounted rifles and cavalry, and commanding the Canadian cavalry contingent sent to England for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (1897). He was promoted lieutenant-colonel to command the Yukon Field Force in 1898, and commanded the 2nd Battalion, 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles, in S Africa (1900) and the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles (1901-02). In 1907 he was appointed District Officer Commanding at Winnipeg but the following summer he fell suddenly ill and died.
