Travels and Adventures in Canada and the Indian Territories between the Years 1760 and 1776 (New York, 1809; Toronto, 1901) was written by Alexander Henry (the elder), one of the first Britons to venture into western Indigenous territory after the defeat of the French at Québec. Henry describes his experiences among the Indigenous peoples and Canadiens in sharp, clean prose. Particularly memorable is his eyewitness account of the capture of Fort Michilimackinac; the Ojibwa slaughtered the British garrison after entering the fort on the pretext of chasing a lacrosse ball, and Henry narrowly escaped with his life. Henry's comprehensive, detailed and occasionally blood-chilling narrative is among the most engaging and best written of the fur traders' records.
