Harris, Carrol Wayne
Carrol Wayne Harris, football player (b at Hampton, Ark 4 May 1938). Many regard Harris as the greatest ever to have played the position of centre linebacker in the CFL. The anchor of the CALGARY STAMPEDER defence, he won 4 SCHENLEY AWARDS (1965, 1966, 1970, 1971), the most ever for a defensive player, and was selected to 11 Western all-star and 9 all-Canadian teams. He led the team to 3 GREY CUP appearances, culminating in a win in the 1971 game, in which he was named the outstanding player. His career ended midway in the 1972 season when he sustained a serious neck injury.
