Gallie, William Edward

William Edward Gallie, surgeon, educator (born at Barrie, Ont 29 Jan 1882; d at Toronto 25 Sept 1959). He graduated from Barrie Collegiate Institute in 1899 and received his MD from the University of Toronto in 1903. He spent the next 2 years interning in Toronto at the Hospital for Sick Children and Toronto General Hospital. A third year was spent at the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled in New York.

Dr. Gallie and his associates made widely accepted contributions in the areas of tendon fixation, repair of bone and the transplantation of tissue as "living sutures." He held appointments at the Hospital for Sick Children and Toronto General Hospital, advancing to surgeon-in-chief at both these institutions. He served as chairman of the department of surgery (1929-47) and as dean of medicine (1936-46) at U of T. As chairman of surgery at U of T, he instituted an organized training program for surgeons in Canada in 1931, which became known as the Gallie Course in Surgery.
