William Thomas Pipes, lawyer, politician, premier of NS (b at Amherst, NS 15 Apr 1850; d at Boston, Mass 7 Oct 1909). Pipes, a leading figure in the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, held various Cabinet posts and was premier between 1882 and 1884. During the provincial election of 1886 he created consternation within party circles, referring to Premier FIELDING's secession from the Confederation campaign as "the putrid carcass of repeal." In part his opposition reflected his attachment to the industrial development of his home town of Amherst. At his death, Pipes was a director of Amherst Boot and Shoe Manufacturing Co, a large shareholder in the Rhodes Curry Co, director and secretary of the Nova Scotia Lumber Co and attorney general of the province.
