Marie Lamensch

Marie Lamensch is the project coordinator at the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) at Concordia University. She is the foreign affairs editor at The Mantle, and is currently serving as president of the Canadian International Council's Montreal Branch.

Born in Belgium, Marie has a Bachelor’s degree in History with a specialization in Genocide Studies from Concordia University. She has a Master’s degree in Conflict, Security and Development from King’s College London's department of War Studies where she specialized in complex political emergencies, post-conflict reconciliation and women's role during conflicts.

Marie started collaborating with MIGS in 2007, monitoring domestic media for hate speech. In 2012 she was hired as assistant to the Director and later became project coordinator. She co-manages MIGS' numerous projects and is in charge of the institute's communications. Marie regularly offers courses to Canadian and foreign diplomats, journalists and students, and has engaged in several consultancies for NGOs and Canadian government agencies. She is frequently asked to speak at national and international conferences, and to provide commentary and analysis for French and English language media.

An associate researcher with the Observatoire de géopolitique at UQÀM's Chaire Raoul-Dandurand, Marie’s policy interests include foreign affairs, international security, mass atrocity prevention, violent extremism, new technologies and human rights. Her research focuses on women, violent extremism, and the role of women in non-state armed groups. Her writing can be found in many national and international publications, including OpenCanada.org.
