    Jack Miner

    John (“Jack”) Thomas Miner, also known as “Wild Goose Jack,” conservationist, lecturer (born 10 April 1865 in Dover Center, Ohio; died 3 November 1944 in Kingsville, ON). In 1904, Jack Miner created one of North America’s first bird sanctuaries. He was also one of the earliest to attach bands to the legs of migratory birds for the scientific study of their habits. Over the course of his lifetime he banded over 90,000 ducks and Canada geese, often inscribing bits of biblical scripture on each band. His records of these birds and their migratory patterns helped persuade the Canadian government to ratify the Migratory Birds Convention Act in 1917.

    John Tuzo Wilson, CC, OBE, FRS, FRSC, geophysicist and geologist (born 24 October 1908 in Ottawa, ON; died 15 April 1993 in Toronto). Wilson is perhaps best known for his research and theory of plate tectonics (see John Tuzo Wilson’s Theory of Plate Tectonics). He was the recipient of numerous honours and awards including the Vetlesen Prize (1978), considered equivalent to a Nobel Prize for earth scientists.

    Joselito Arocena

    Dr. Joselito (Lito) Modancia Arocena, soil scientist (born 5 March 1959 in Liliw, Laguna, Philippines; died 20 December 2015 in Prince George, BC). A soil researcher, Arocena was a founding faculty member of the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and held its first Canada Research Chair appointment in 2001. He was known by his nickname “Lito.” He helped found the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute (NRESi). Arocena collaborated internationally with universities in Spain, Germany, France and China and held an adjunct professorship with Wenzhou University.
