    Asteroids Named After Places in Canada

    Asteroids were first discovered in 1801. Also known as minor planets, these rocky bodies are believed to have originated as planetesimals (small, solid celestial bodies) during the creation of the solar system, around 4.5 billion years ago. Asteroids orbit the Sun and can be as small as several metres or even as large as hundreds of kilometres in diameter. (See also Planet and Satellite.) There are estimated to be over 1.3 million asteroids in our solar system. Although most will never be seen by the naked eye, many asteroids are assigned names by the Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature of the International Astronomical Union (see Astronomy). Several hundred asteroids have been named in connection to Canada. Some of these asteroids describe places, while others honour people or commemorate events. This list includes ten asteroids which are named after places in Canada.

    Canadian Astronauts

    An astronaut is an individual involved in flight beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. Since the National Research Council of Canada held its first recruitment campaign in 1983, 14 Canadians have completed astronaut training and nine have participated in 17 missions to space. Specifically, they have flown as payload specialists, mission specialists, and flight engineers on NASA shuttle flights and expeditions to the International Space Station (ISS). Canadian astronauts have played key roles in repairing satellites and building the ISS using the Canadarm and Canadarm2 robotic technologies, and have advanced scientific knowledge by conducting a variety of experiments in space.     Astronomy

    Astronomy is the science that studies the sun, the solar system, the remote stars, distant galaxies and all other detectable bodies in the universe. Its major subdisciplines include astrophysics, the closely related field of spectroscopy and cosmology. Astronomy is often regarded as the oldest science. For more than 5,000 years, motions in the sky have been used to predict events such as the annual flood of the Nile River. During the era of modern exploration, astronomy had practical applications in navigation, surveying and timekeeping. Modern astronomy, however, is more concerned with the physical and chemical nature of matter beyond Earth, where conditions of temperature, pressure and gravitational and magnetic fields allow astronomers to observe matter under extremes unattainable in terrestrial laboratories. Astronomy is also closely related to physics, chemistry, mathematics, geology, engineering and computer science.

    Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner)

    Based on an ancient Inuit folktale, Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner) is the first Inuktitut-language feature film ever made. A critically-acclaimed commercial success, it won numerous awards worldwide, including the Camera d’or for best first feature at the Cannes Film Festival and five Genie Awards, including Best Screenplay, Best Direction and Best Motion Picture, as well as the Claude Jutra Award (now the Canadian Screen Award for Best First Feature). It is widely considered one of the best Canadian films ever made, and in 2015 was ranked No. 1 of all time in a poll conducted by the Toronto International Film Festival (see Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time).
