(William) Allan Burt. Baritone, b Toronto 11 Aug 1897, d there 6 Sep 1957. After study with Edward Broome in Toronto, he won a scholarship to work with Vladimir Rosing in the Opera Department of the ESM. He made his professional debut in July 1926 in the first season of opera ever presented at Chautauqua, NY, his roles including Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Silvio in I Pagliacci, and Captain Corcoran in H.M.S. Pinafore. He was a member 1927-9 of the American Opera Company, touring the USA and Canada in a repertoire that included Silvio, Valentin in Faust, and Plunkett in Martha. Subsequently Burt was active in concerts and on CBC radio until he joined the Canadian armed forces at the advent of World War II. After the war he taught at the Maritime Academy of Music (Maritime Conservatory of Music).
