Arts and Culture Centre, St John's, Nfld. Public building opened 22 May 1967. It was designed by Cummings and Campbell of St John's and Lebensold, Affleck, their Montreal associates, with acoustic design by Russell Johnson Associates. It comprises a 1017-seat theatre (regarded as one of Canada's finest auditoriums), an art gallery, a Maritime museum, libraries, and meeting and rehearsal rooms. The St John's Symphony Orchestra performed there 1970-79 and it became the home of the Newfoundland SOin 1979. The centre has also hosted a wide variety of Canadian and international performers including Peter Appleyard, Wilf Carter, Bruce Cockburn, Figgy Duff, Mary Lou Fallis, André Gagnon, Rita MacNeil, Yehudi Menuhin, Fred Penner, the Canadian Brass, the COC, and a Provincial Folk Festival in addition to dance, theatre, film, and community-oriented presentations.
