Augustines de la Miséricorde de Jésus

Augustines de la Miséricorde de Jésus, female religious congregation formed in 1957 by the federation of 14 Canadian convents (plus 3 foreign missions) of the Augustines hospitalières, which until then had been autonomous. The first convent founded in Canada was Hôtel-Dieu in Québec City, 1639; its members were all drawn from the convent in Dieppe, France, which had existed prior to 1285 and perhaps even 1155. These Augustines were the hospitallers in North America and, along with the Ursulines, the first nuns in Canada.

Since 1946 a federation has also existed in France, with its generalate in Rennes. In 1996 there were 350 sisters (down from 515 in 1986). The generalate is in Sillery, Québec. See also Christian Religious Communities.
