Eva Gauthier, mezzo-soprano, teacher (b at Ottawa 20 Sept 1885; d at New York C, NY 26 Dec 1958). In 1901, 5 years after taking part in the farewell tour of Emma ALBANI, she made her debut in Ottawa. In 1902 she left for Europe, where she studied elocution with Sarah Bernhardt and sang in concert with Enrico Caruso. She left the stage after 1910 and thereafter appeared only in concert or recital, giving the premiere performance of more than 700 songs and helping to introduce George Gershwin to a wider audience in 1923. Eastern music, which she had studied in the Orient, where her husband owned plantations, was also part of her varied repertoire.
