Joseph Wright Sr

Joseph Wright, Sr, oarsman (b at Toronto 13 Jan 1864; d there 18 Oct 1950). In 1950 Wright was named Canada's outstanding oarsman of the half-century. In 1885 he stroked a Toronto Argonaut crew to victory at the US Nationals.

Joseph Wright, Sr, oarsman (b at Toronto 13 Jan 1864; d there 18 Oct 1950). In 1950 Wright was named Canada's outstanding oarsman of the half-century. In 1885 he stroked a Toronto Argonaut crew to victory at the US Nationals. Twenty years later he led the Argonauts to victory at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. In all, he won 137 national titles. One of the most famous rowing coaches in the world, he looked after U of Penn crews 1916-26, and coached his son Joe Jr to victory at the prestigious Diamond Sculls in 1928. Wright was successful at many other sports. He won the Canadian amateur heavyweight wrestling championship at 35, and at 44 played football on the senior Argonaut team.
