Paul Hahn

Paul Hahn. Cellist, businessman, b Reutlingen, south of Stuttgart, 11 May 1875, d Balsam Lake, Ont, 20 Jul 1962. Paul Hahn arrived in Canada in 1888 and settled in Toronto. His cello teachers included Rudolph Ruth in Toronto and Alwin Schroeder in Boston.

Paul Hahn. Cellist, businessman, b Reutlingen, south of Stuttgart, 11 May 1875, d Balsam Lake, Ont, 20 Jul 1962. Paul Hahn arrived in Canada in 1888 and settled in Toronto. His cello teachers included Rudolph Ruth in Toronto and Alwin Schroeder in Boston. He was a member of the College Trio with Heinrich Klingenfeld and J. Lewis Browne during the 1890s, of the Klingenfeld String Quartette 1901-3, and of the Hambourg Trio ca 1910-12. He also gave solo recitals. He taught at the Toronto College of Music.

Paul Hahn worked 1892-1913 for the A. & S. Nordheimer Co. and then formed his own business, Paul Hahn Pianos (Toronto) in 1913. The company sold sheet music and several makes of piano including Steinway 1928-43 and became an agent for the Baldwin piano in 1963. Hahn Sr. retired in 1955 and the business continued under the management of his son Paul as Paul Hahn & Co. For more than forty years the company has sold new and used pianos, but the company's focus has been the tuning and restoration of pianos. Hahn Sr. was a member of the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto and an authority on extinct and vanishing birds. He was the brother of Gustav Hahn, the painter, and Emmanuel Hahn, the sculptor.

Paul Hahn Jr. b Toronto, 16 Jun 1932, d French River, 1 Aug 2008, began working at his father's business in 1948 and in 1997, Alexandra Hahn, one of Paul Hahn Jr.'s four daughters, took over the business.
