Scott Young

Scott Alexander Young, journalist, author (b at Glenboro, Man 14 Apr 1918; d at Kingston 12 June 2005). Young was one of Canada's most distinguished sports journalists. He began his career at the Winnipeg Free Press during 1936-40.

He began his career at the Winnipeg Free Press during 1936-40. After service with the Canadian Press from 1940-43, during which he was CP correspondent in London 1942-43, he served with the RCNVR in Europe and the Mediterranean in 1944-45.

After the war he returned to journalism as assistant editor at Maclean's magazine during 1945-48, and from the 1950s to 1980 he was a popular sports columnist and commentator at the Toronto Globe and Mail, the Toronto Telegram and the CBC. He also had success as a novelist, short story writer and popular historian, and published some 40 books, most of them sports history and biography. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a journalist in 1988. He was popular musician Neil Young's father.
