Suzanne Shulman. Flutist, b Toronto 30 Nov 1946; Artist Diploma (Toronto) 1967. Her teachers were Nicholas Fiore and Robert Aitken at the University of Toronto and (in 1967) Christian Lardé, Michel Debost, Marcel Moyse, and Jean-Pierre Rampal in Paris. She has toured for the JMC in Canada (1968, 1969) and, under the auspices of the Canadian Dept of External Affairs and JM, in the USA (1970), in France (1970, 1973), in Belgium, Germany, and Poland (1971) and in South America (1972). She was a soloist with the NYO on a 1970 tour and has performed with the TS (1971), the McGill Chamber Orchestra (1974 and again in 1982 to premiere Alexander Brott'sHymn II Her), the Hamilton Philharmonic, the BBC Scottish and Welsh orchestras; and others in Canada, Poland, and Spain. She gave two recitals in 1971 at Wigmore Hall, London, one with the pianist Claude Savard and one with the French harpist Catherine Michel. With Savard she has recorded music by Martinu°, Roussel, and Leon Zuckert (1975, RCI 421). Shulman has collaborated with the harpsichordist Douglas Bodle, the harpist Marisa Robles, the violinists Marta Hidy and Steven Staryk, and the pianists Angela Hewitt and Valerie Tryon. She and Tryon presented a recital of Canadian works at Canada House, London, 9 May 1983 that included the Sonata commissioned for them from Srul Irving Glick, which they recorded along with works by Enesco and Prokofiev, in 1987 (RCI 646; the Glick was re-issued on 4-ACM 34).

Shulman has a special interest in chamber music; she was a founding member of Camerata, and continued in 1990 to perform with Mark Childs, viola, and Erica Goodman, harp, in Trio Lyra, which grew out of Camerata. As a member of the Pro Arte Trio (with Jane Coop, piano, and Belva Spiel, soprano) she made the LP Folk Songs in Concert Form (Folk FTS-31314) in 1978. She has appeared regularly, both as a soloist and an ensemble member, at the Elora Festival, the Festival of the Sound, Music at Sharon, and Musical Mondays. She may be heard on Roxolana Roslak's Centredisc recording Kuyas (1983, CMC-1183), on The Three Brave Snowflakes by Leon Zuckert (1987?, Septima ZB-1 cass), and on three Classical Kids records: Mr. Bach Comes to Call (1988, SAN-CD-1002), Beethoven Lives Upstairs (1989, SAN-CD-1003), and Magic Flute Fantasy (1990, SAN-CD-1023).

Shulman began teaching at McMaster University in 1980 and at the University of Toronto and the RCMT in 1984.
