Alfred Savage

Alfred Savage, veterinarian, teacher, researcher (born 10 August 1889 in Montréal, Qc; died 14 January 1970 in Winnipeg). After serving during First World War in the Canadian Army Veterinary Corps 1915-19, he became professor of animal pathology at University of Manitoba 1921-64. He was also head of the dept of animal pathology and bacteriology 1930-45 and dean of agriculture 1933-37, and was animal pathologist for the Manitoba Department of Agriculture 1937-57.

Savage conducted early investigations of semen evaluation and agglutination tests for brucellosis, and developed surgical instruments and improved techniques for anesthesia. He was an outstanding lecturer and teacher, and was influential in the formation of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, of which he was president 1951-52.
